The Panama corregimiento (district) San Francisco was founded on August 9, 1926 thanks to President Belisario Porras, who purchased 12 acres of land, divided it into 74 lots and distributed among the villagers.
It is believed that the name of the district San Francisco is because some local fishermen found the image of a saint on the beach known as Peña Prieta. The Saint was identified by residents as San Francisco and thus, the name came to be.
San Francisco, Panama measures around 5.6 km² and has a population of about 35.000+ inhabitants. Its limits are to the north with Pueblo Nuevo, to the south with the Panama Bay, to the southwest with Bella Vista and west with Via Brasil. The neighborhoods that now compromise the district are approximately 14: Altamira Altos del Golf, Boca La Caja, Brisas del Golf, Carrasquilla, Coco del Mar, Dos Palmeras, Loma Alegre, Punta Paitilla, San Francisco Centro, San Sebastian, Lilia Villa, La Playita and Viña del Carmen.
