Ever since the arrival of the Spanish colonies to Panama in 1501 and the discovery of the Pacific Ocean in 1513, the search for how to move ships from one ocean to another began. Once the Panama Canal was completed, Panama gets nicknamed "Crossroads of the World".

Ancon was founded October 1, 1979. Through a new law created on October 1982, a new political division was made in the Ancon territory, the Panama Canal Zone and two new townships emerge: Ancon in Pacific Sector and Atlantic, Cristobal.

Ancon is one of the biggest corregimientos, measures around 664.5 km² and has approximately 11.169 inhabitants. Ancon´s political division is Balboa, Ancon, Amador, Altos de Jesús, Pedro Miguel, Paraiso Gamboa, Kuna Nega and Altos del Lago.

Ancon extends all the way from the edge of the Arraijan town to the Gamboa sector.
